School projects have short install windows and long approval chains. Settling these points before the submittal saves a round of revisions.
Performance
- Openness factor — 3% for rooms with interactive displays or sunny facades; 5% as the default
- Blackout rooms — AV, music and multipurpose rooms; decide if side channels are needed
- Fabric color — darker interior faces give better view-through and less glare
Code and safety
- Fire test — fabrics tested to NFPA 701 (Canada: check the board's standard, often CAN/ULC-S109 or NFPA 701)
- Cord safety — chain tension devices fixed to the wall, or motorized; no loose loops
- Hardware — metal brackets and hem bars for daily use
Openings
- Ribbon windows wider than 120 in — multi-band shades on one chain, or split by mullion
- Clerestory and gym windows — motorized, on a key switch
- Mounting depth at every opening, including window hardware
Schedule
- Samples and submittal approved at least 10 weeks before the break
- Field measurements confirmed; production released 4–5 weeks before install
- Shades labeled by room number, delivered a week before the crew starts
