Bathroom windows are usually small, but they cause more remakes than any other room: tile returns, window cranks and towel bars all get in the way.
1. Decide inside or outside mount
- Inside mount — the shade sits within the window opening. Needs at least 1.5 in (38 mm) of flat depth; 2.5 in for the shade to sit fully recessed.
- Outside mount — the shade is fixed to the wall or trim above. Better privacy at the edges, and the right choice when the depth is shallow or tiled at an angle.
2. Measure width in three places
Measure the inside width at the top, middle and bottom, to the nearest ⅛ in. For inside mount, use the smallest — we deduct the operating clearance at the factory, so don't deduct it yourself.
3. Measure height in three places
Left, center and right. Use the longest for inside mount.
4. Check for obstructions
- Casement or awning window cranks that stick into the opening
- Tile returns that aren't square
- Towel bars, faucets or a tub deck under the window
Note them on the order or send a photo. An outside mount usually solves all three.
5. Note the operation
Cordless for small windows; for a window over a tub, consider a motor so no one leans over the water.
