Toiles imperméables ou résistantes à l’humidité : ce que disent vraiment les étiquettes

Imperméable, hydrofuge, résistant à l’humidité, anti-moisissure : quatre mentions souvent confondues.

Search for bathroom window shades and you'll see "waterproof" on almost every listing. Very few fabric roller shades are waterproof in any meaningful sense, and the difference matters when you choose a shade for a bathroom or kitchen.

The four labels

Label What it should mean What it doesn't mean
Waterproof Water cannot pass through or damage the product, even under direct spray Rarely true for a complete shade — tube, brackets and hem bar included
Water-resistant Resists water for a limited time; droplets bead up Suitable for regular soaking
Moisture-resistant Doesn't absorb humidity or steam; stays flat, wipes clean Suitable for direct water spray
Mold / mildew-resistant Fabric tested to inhibit mildew growth under set conditions (e.g. ASTM G21) Mildew can never appear — dirt and soap residue can still grow it

What we claim for our Marin fabrics

Marin fabrics are moisture-resistant: a PVC-coated polyester that doesn't absorb moisture and wipes clean. The fabric is tested for mildew resistance to ASTM G21 and we'll send the report on request. We don't call it waterproof, and we don't recommend it inside a shower enclosure.

Practical advice

  1. Keep the shade out of direct spray — a window inside the shower needs frosted glass or a film, not a fabric shade.
  2. Run the exhaust fan; no fabric replaces ventilation.
  3. After a hot shower, leave the shade lowered so it dries flat.
  4. Wipe it down with mild soap as part of regular cleaning.

If a listing promises "100% waterproof," ask what was tested, and whether the claim covers the fabric or the whole shade.
